This coast has a special local microclimate because of its geographical location and the scenery is considered some of the best in southern Europe. The area continues to be focussed on agricultural production with sub-tropical fruits and horticultural produce from the coastal area and grapes, wine, almonds and olives from the surrounding mountains. The Costa Tropical is very popular in summer with Spanish tourists from the large cities of Spain. Tourism is also increasing rapidly with other European nationalities and there are concentrations of European residents now living permanently in the region. The key tourist areas are mainly on the west of the coast including La Herradura, Almuñécar, Salobreña, Motril and Torreneuva. The eastern part of the coast is less developed and more tranquil being well suited to traditional family holidays. Tourist areas with beaches on the this part of the coast are Carchuna, Calahonda, Castell de Ferro, La Mamola and La Rábita. This eastern area also has secluded coves. There are three airports nearby. To the north is Granada airport, to the east is Almeria airport and to the west is Malaga airport. There are direct low cost flights from the UK to Almeria and Malaga but at present there are no direct low cost flights from the UK to Granada. The main European coastal motorway E-15 from Calais to Cádiz gives direct road access to the area from northern Europe, as does the main southern motorway E-5 from Madrid.
